The Spiritual Meaning of Herbs: Nature, Healing & Ancient Wisdom

For thousands of years, plants have played an important role in human history, not only as sources of food and traditional medicine but also as powerful symbols in religious ceremonies, folklore, and spiritual practices.

Across different cultures, herbs have been associated with protection, purification, prosperity, love, wisdom, and transformation.

In many magical traditions, plants are believed to carry symbolic energies that correspond with different aspects of human experience.

For example:

🌿 Rosemary – Remembrance & Protection: Traditionally associated with memory, purification, loyalty, and spiritual protection.

💜 Lavender – Peace & Tranquility: Often used symbolically to encourage relaxation, emotional balance, and peaceful intentions.

🌹 Rose – Love & Compassion: A timeless symbol of affection, beauty, emotional connection, and self-love.

🌱 Sage – Wisdom & Purification: Associated with clarity, spiritual cleansing, and the release of unwanted influences in various traditions.

🌼 Chamomile – Calmness & Prosperity: Traditionally connected with tranquility, patience, abundance, and gentle emotional renewal.

These associations are examples of broader herbal folklore and spiritual traditions, illustrating how plants can become meaningful symbols in personal reflection and magical practices.

The Herbal Tarot brings this relationship between plants and symbolism into Tarot, encouraging you to explore the natural world through a different perspective.

A Little History: How Does Tarot Work?

Tarot is a symbolic system traditionally composed of 78 cards, divided into two main groups:

Major Arcana (22 Cards): Represent significant life lessons, spiritual development, personal transformation, and important turning points in our journey.

Minor Arcana (56 Cards): Explore everyday experiences through four suits traditionally associated with emotions, thoughts, material circumstances, and personal ambitions.

During a Tarot reading, the cards form a symbolic story that can help you reflect on your circumstances, recognize patterns, and explore different possibilities.

The Herbal Tarot follows the general structure of the classic Rider-Waite system while introducing an additional layer of meaning through plants and their traditional associations.

These correspondences invite readers to explore the symbolism of plants alongside traditional card meanings, creating opportunities for deeper reflection and intuitive interpretation.

So, if you're seeking guidance in love, career, personal growth, or spiritual development, the Herbal Tarot offers a nature-inspired approach to exploring your life's journey.

How to Use Your Herbal Tarot Deck

1. Connect with Nature: Before your first reading, explore the cards and observe the different herbs represented. Notice which plants feel familiar and which ones spark your curiosity.

2. Set Your Intention: Hold your deck, take a deep breath, and focus on your question. You may choose an affirmation such as, "I open myself to the wisdom of nature and trust my intuition to guide me toward clarity and growth."

3. Ask an Open-Ended Question: Try asking, "What area of my life needs more attention?" or "What can nature teach me about my current situation?"

4. Shuffle & Draw: Shuffle your cards while concentrating on your question. Draw one card for daily reflection or three cards to explore your situation, challenge, and possible next step.

5. Explore the Herbal Connection: Identify the plant featured on each card and consider its traditional symbolism. Use the included instruction booklet to understand the card's upright or reversed meaning.

6. Make It Personal: Write down your interpretations, research the folklore of unfamiliar herbs, and reflect on how the symbolism relates to your experiences.

Remember, learning Tarot is a journey of discovery. The more you explore its symbols and meanings, the more confident you'll become in developing your own reading style.
