Get Goated Story: The Girl and Her Degree.

At one of the last companies I worked for before becoming independent, I met a girl who was incredibly smart. She was in her early 20s, sharp, fast, and honestly a pleasure to work with. Everything she did, she did well; you could tell she had brains and discipline.

As we got to know each other better, she told me she had recently graduated, had her Master’s degree, and was about to start her PhD. And I couldn’t help but ask her:

“If you have your degrees… why are you working here making $13/h?”

“Because no one is hiring,” she said, very confidently.

“What do you mean, no one is hiring?” I asked her.

“No one is hiring someone like me. I’m too young. I don’t have my PhD yet. They won’t hire me.”

“With your education, you could easily be making $60 an hour."

She laughed and said, “I wish. But no one is hiring.”

And no matter how many times I told her to apply, to try, to put herself out there in her field… she always came back to the same sentence: “No one is hiring.”

That’s when it hit me. It wasn’t the job market holding her back. It wasn’t her age. It wasn’t her lack of experience. It was her belief. She had already decided what her future looked like, and because of that, she wasn’t even looking for opportunities. Her mind had locked her into a reality where she was “unhireable” until she got her next degree, and so that’s exactly the reality she kept creating.

Sometimes we don’t fail because we’re not capable. We fail because we’ve already convinced ourselves it won’t work. Degrees, titles, and experience, none of that matters if your mindset is telling you, “it’s not possible.” Because life will always prove you right. So if you want to Get Goated, check the story you’re telling yourself, because those who believe they can and those who believe they can’t are both right.
